TRU-COOL SR Coolers use the oil viscosity, rather than thermostats or valves, to automatically regulate the cooling.   Cold, thicker oil passes through the upper two plates, its viscosity delaying it from flowing through the rest of the cooler.   When the temperature rises and viscosity decreases, the oil takes advantage of the multiple-channel oil paths for optimal cooling.  Should the oil temperature drop, the thicker oil returns to the by-pass route to prevent over-cooling.   So the oil itself determines when it needs to be cooled.
